Footprint Architects have submitted planning for phase 3 of works to Downton Primary School. The works includes two additional KS2 classrooms, communal group space, a new toilet block. It also includes an extension to the existing hall to make the school compliant with BB103 requirements. In addition the school seeks to expand its playing field onto the Downton Memorial Gardens with a hard play surface and a community shared Multi Use Games Area.
The concept for the proposed extension is to provide unique contemporary teaching spaces that will serve Years 5 and 6 of the school. The design allows the school to expand from a 1FE to a 1.5FE but ensures that the overall communal feel of the existing school is not lost. Architectural references from the existing school have been included within the design to ensure that the proposed extension ties in with its context.
The design allows the school to become more flexible with its spaces. Internal bi-fold doors will allow the school to create an optional corridor within the main hall, therefore increasing required capacity for school assemblies and community events. This also allows the hall to remain private and undisturbed when being utilised for teaching.
The siting of the proposal is on the rear elevation of the school and is not visible when approaching the school from Gravel Lane. Glimpses of the extension will be visible from the Borough and the design has been developed with this in mind. The design also enables a strong connection to be made to the playground and its surrounding external spaces. Creating a secure and manageable play space
