Our Process

At Footprint Architects, we provide services that are tailored to each project, client, and design stage. With our extensive experience across a range of project sectors, RIBA stages and budgets, we offer guidance across the whole design timeline, from our first coffee meeting to the final sign off inhabitation.

Brief & Goals

RIBA Stage 1

Every project starts with a discussion. We get to know the client, their perspective, and aspirations. An understanding of the brief is developed, informed by the client’s goals, site, context and budget. We build a friendly relationship with the client, valuing them as a member of the design team. The initial objectives of the project are confirmed, our deliverables are set out and a concept takes form.

Research & Concept

RIBA Stage 2

Once an understanding of the brief is formed, we carry out research into the physical, natural and historic context of the site. This includes analysis of the local architecture, materials and the natural forms of the area, which aim to embed the proposal within its environment. From this, primary site layouts, physical forms and material pallets can generate. We produce initial research reports, accommodation schedules, precedent studies, conceptual sketches and 3D visualisations to share our thought processes and visions with the client.

Design Development

RIBA Stage 3

Following discussions with the client, a refined concept is formed and a future direction is identified. Further development is carried out, using cutting edge technologies such as Photogrammety and Virual Reality to bring our vision to life. Details, materials and final forms are refined and a Planning Application is proposed. We offer specialist guidance through this process.

Technical Development

RIBA Stage 4

The proposal is then developed technically in preparation for it’s submission to Tender. This is achieved through collaboration with a variety of consultants and the use of modern BIM modelling. Construction costs are reviewed and final materials, finishes and fitting-out is specified.

Construction & Completion

RIBA Stage 5 & 6

At this stage, we provide a full design drawing package, schedule of works and specification for the construction of the proposal. We continue to provide guidance and support throughout the construction process. This includes construction quality control, site visits, meetings and the to overseeing of any potential changes. We ensure that the project is delivered to a high quality, on budget and delivers the clients aspirations.
