Community

Bournemouth, Dorset

Awards

Set in the heart of Bournemouth square, Footprint Architects have been part of the team responsible with refurbishment, commercial fit out & historical restoration of this landmark building since 2020. Bobby’s & Co has actively played a part in reviving the high street of Bournemouth. This retrofit project embodies the essence of what communities seek from their high streets: inspiring interiors, points of interest, social spaces and interactions in beautiful architecturally designed spaces.

Designing a Sustainable Refurbishment
Sustainability sits at the forefront of what we do at Footprint Architects. One of the key advantages of re-purposing obsolete retail space and commercial properties is the environmental sustainability it offers. By opting for refurbishment over demolition and rebuilding, we significantly reduce our carbon footprint and embrace a greener alternative. An essential aspect of our project is the integration of sustainability features aimed at enhancing the building's thermal performance, reducing embodied carbon, and improving fire safety. By prioritising these aspects, we not only create a space that is environmentally responsible but also one that can be enjoyed by future generations for years to come.

Honouring Heritage and Restoration
In the transformation of the former Debenhams building, we have seamlessly blended historical charm with modern functionality. By retaining and showcasing original architectural features such as copper domes, balconies, and flagpoles, we pay homage to the building's rich heritage while infusing it with new life and purpose. Efficient use of space within historic buildings is paramount to our approach. By carefully re-configuring and renovating the existing shell, we can accommodate new uses while minimising waste and maximising functionality. Additionally, if the refurbishment is designed and programmed carefully it can get the space to the market quicker than a new-build project would.

Meeting Community Needs
This project reflects a deep understanding of the evolving desires of communities. By transforming the former Debenhams space into a vibrant mixed-use development, we are responding to the demand for diverse, engaging, and experiential spaces. Our team designed a welcoming facade which serves as the gateway to revitalising high streets’ spaces, inviting the public to explore and experience all that our development has to offer. Through thoughtful design and strategic placement of amenities, we aimed to create an inclusive environment that enhances community engagement and connectivity. Furthermore, our commitment to bringing in local tenants; Gozney, Parlour and Patch, ensures that our development supports local businesses and remains rooted in the local fabric of the community. Further works encompass a rooftop terrace, a restaurant/bar, serviced offices, and an event space.
