Located in the New Forest, this existing grade II listed farmhouse was carefully restored with traditional materials and a new contemporary and contextual extension building was added. The barn was converted to create a striking new kitchen for this family home.

Conservation Design to a Grade || Listed House

The existing grade II listed farmhouse was carefully restored with the use of traditional materials and a modern extension building was added to form a delicately detailed connection to the original barn. This barn conversion consisted of designing a modern kitchen to the existing family home. We opted to use traditional materials in a contemporary way. Using appropriate restoration techniques to maintain the existing features and combine it with a new modern expansion.

Incorporating Sustainability into an Existing House
The idea is simple, demolish as little as possible and re-use the existing structure to reduce carbon emissions. Retrofitting typically involves a significant improvement in the thermal performance of the existing building fabric to create a warm and comfortable home. Upgrading insulation and increasing thermal performance is a simple but highly effective way to reduce energy consumption. This low-tech approach ensured that this barn conversion has low running costs, simple to maintain, and is a healthy environment to live in. This barn conversion consisted of upgrading its thermal performance by fully insulating the barn and sympathetically detailed using a mix of modern and traditional materials, techniques and craftsmanship. This future proofs an existing listed house to achieve long-term sustainability.

Designing a Modern Farmhouse Refurbishment
This project involved developing an ingenious design to give an historic building a new lease of life. Repurposing this old listed building was an appealing alternative to a new build. Our team were able to highlight the existing character of the countryside through the use of traditional materials and framing key views which ensured the richness of its architectural heritage was preserved. We sensitively designed relevant energy efficiency improvements and modern features that made it fit for modern living within its historic setting and respecting its grade || listed features.
